| The
University of Minnesota Promise Fellows
September 2001 – June 2002
Abdirahman
Adan and Bashir Hassan, Mentor Fellows, Sponsored by General College's
Commanding English Program
The goal of the fellows' work was to develop a "College Connections
Program" that reaches out to second-language high school juniors
and seniors and encourage them to go on to higher education. Abdirahman
and Bashir mentored seniors at various metro high schools, trained volunteers
to work with high school students, and partnered with the Office of Admissions
at the U of M to provide specialized tours for visiting youth and families
whose first language is not English.
Maya
Babu, Minnesota Alliance with Youth Fellow, Sponsored by the Center for
4-H Youth Development
Maya organized the University of Promise Fellow effort on campus and gave
logistical support for the Minnesota Alliance with Youth Coordinating
Team.
Maya spearheaded the University-wide Conversation held in December
2001, and helped with the statewide Youth-Adult Development Conversation
held in January of 2002. Reccomendations from these forums became
part of the National
Conversation on Youth in the 21st Century.
Amy
DeLong, Teach Fellow, Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural and Academic
Affairs
Amy collected and summarized research on risk and protective factors
in the lives of Native American youth. She studied what is known about
youth
at the community level -- urban and reservation-based – in order
to understand how effective programs can be built.
Simon
Denny, Research Fellow, Sponsored by the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent
Health
Simon worked to develop a generic multimedia computer-assisted self-interviewing
survey tool that can be used by researchers to modify any youth health
questionnaire and to fit various settings. This tool helps create efficiency
in data collection, increase the reporting of sensitive behaviors in youth,
and encourage youth participation in research.
Alondra Espejel, Service Fellow, Sponsored by the Career and Community
Learning Center
Alondra organized and facilitated courses that
incorporate a service-learning component. She worked with instructors,
students and community organizations to help place and support students
in service and applied research projects. Alondra was also part
of the team of CCLC fellows that put together and facilitated
the "Dinner
and Dialogue: Children, Youth, Families and the U", a university
and community forum held in April 2002.
Will
Gaines and Callie Tabor, Counties of Promise Fellows, Sponsored by the
Association of Minnesota Counties and the Center for 4-H Youth Development
Will and Callie helped plan the statewide Youth-Adult Development Conversation
that was held in January 2002. They also served as contacts for the Counties
of Promise and assisted the counties with their Promise efforts.
Emily
Hanson, Service Fellow, Sponsored by the Career and Community Learning
Center
Emily, a Service-Learning Liaison, assisted in the communication process
between faculty and students at the University and community organizations
around service-learning
courses. In April, 2002, Emily was one of the CCLC fellows who
organized and facilitated the university and community forum "Dinner
and Dialogue: Children, Youth, Families and the U."
Lisa
Kimball, Teach Fellow, Sponsored by the Center for 4-H Youth Development
Lisa surveyed the research, program models and public policies that promote
positive out-of-school time for youth. Working with a production team,
she designed the June 2002 issue of The Center magazine, which is focused
on the theme of out-of-school time and is directed to an audience of front-line
youth development practitioners.
Rachel
Olson, Nurture Fellow, Sponsored by the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent
Health and Minnesota Extension Service
Rachel provided assistance to the Teens
Take Action on Health Project, which gives teens a chance to be
leaders in their community by educating, researching, or advocating
around a health topic. Four projects were chosen for the summer of
2002.
Stephanie
Root, Promise Fellow, Sponsored by the Career and Community Learning Center
Stephanie served as a peer advisor with the Community
Empowerment through Learning and Leadership program (CELL). Stephanie
helped advise the University community -- students, staff and
faculty -- on community-based learning opportunities. She was also part
of the team of fellows who organized and facilitated the university
and community forum "Dinner and Dialogue: Children, Youth, Families
and the U" held in April.
Molly
Sheeley, Literacy Fellow, Sponsored by the College of Education and Human
Development
Molly assisted the MN Literacy Consortium, a University-community
collaboration to promote literacy in youth and their families. She
identified and disseminated briefs
in reader-friendly language about the latest research in the literacy
field. She was also involved with recruiting and training America
Reads tutors from among the students, staff and alumni at the University.
Emily
Topinka, Communications Fellow, Sponsored by the Children, Youth and Family
Consortium
Emily coordinated the development of an online searchable database
of University programs that serve and engage youth, and assisted with
a website that will function as a virtual Youth Resource Center for
community practitioners. The database and website provide a starting
place for anyone interested in becoming involved in University of
Promise related programs, or for finding information on a specific
program.
Bill
Wroblewski, Service Fellow, Sponsored by the Career and Community Learning
Center
Bill worked with students, faculty, staff and community organizations
to help organize service-learning
courses. His work included bringing environmental organizations
into the service-learning program. Bill was one of the four CCLC
fellows who helped organize and facilitate "Dinner and Dialogue: Children,
Youth, Families and the U", a university and community forum
held in April.
